IRS Increases Employment Tax Audits Nationwide: What this Means for Businesses and their Employees

The IRS increases employment tax audits into businesses and individual taxpayers. Kevin E. Thorn, Managing Partner of the Thorn Law Group and former IRS attorney, comments on the risks businesses may face when audited by the IRS.
Washington, DC (PRWEB) August 6, 2012 - In late 2009 the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) launched a new compliance program, in which it will select several thousand businesses, in a given year, and conduct a series of audits to ensure that the businesses are properly adhering to federal employment tax laws. This initiative to ensure compliance by businesses is part of the IRS’s National Research Program (NRP).
Kevin E. Thorn, Managing Partner of Thorn Law Group, a law firm that specializes in representing individual taxpayers, businesses, partnerships and other entities throughout the Nation who are under civil audit by the IRS, states, “There has been a noticeable increase in employment tax audits among small and large businesses in the last year or so. Businesses that are not currently in compliance are at risk of an audit.” Mr. Thorn further states, “The IRS has endless resources and may work with state authorities to ensure that taxpayers and businesses are not only complying with federal laws but state employment laws as well.”
Among the taxes and penalties that could be assessed civilly, a business’s failure to comply with federal and state employment tax laws can lead to IRS liens or levies against business assets and even criminal charges against individuals responsible for the failure to pay employment taxes.
Mr. Thorn urges businesses under or at risk of a civil tax audit to contact an attorney experienced in employment tax matters as well as IRS procedures before meeting with the IRS or a state taxing authority. The IRS is committed to bring all taxpayers and businesses subject to federal employment tax laws into compliance.
